SSP 2018: Editage presents an industry survey on science communication

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) celebrated its 40th anniversary at its annual meeting on May 30 – June 1, 2018 at Chicago, IL, USA. The theme for the biggest conference on the academic publishing calendar was “Scholarly Publishing at the Crossroads: What’s Working, What’s Holding Us Back, Where Do We Go From Here?” Editage presented the findings of an industry survey conducted among global scientific, technical, medical, and engineering publishers on the appetite for video as a medium for science communication. Satyajit Rout, Head – Research Communication Services, conducted a session showcasing case studies of publishers who have been successful early adopters of science communication practices. Titled Beyond the traditional journal article: how some journals are redefining how scholarly content can be served and consumed, the session was co-chaired by Paige Shaklee from Cell Press and Patty Baskin from Neurology and shed light on best practices for disseminating scholarly content via new formats.

“Through the last couple of years, we’ve been working closely with top academic publishers and that has placed us at the forefront of efforts aimed at adopting video content in scholarly communications. Coupled with that our theme at this year’s meeting was all about integrating enriched content (video and infographics) into journal workflows to augment the communication of research findings,” mentioned Satyajit.

Over the coming months, Editage hopes it build on its expertise in science communication by helping publishers develop new products that meet their needs to drive real-world impact of science.
