Eratosthenes festivity 2017

Eratosthenes festivity 2017

The Eratosthenes Festivity has become an annual tradition that takes place every year on 21 June at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina; and 20 and 21 June at the city of Aswan. It is designed for preparatory school students, and includes a series of activities that revolve around the methodology Eratosthenes applied in measuring the Earth’s circumference 2000 years ago. On the 21st of June, the day of summer solstice, the 21st century school students conduct Eratosthenes’ experiment on the BA Plaza, and in Aswan (Upper Egypt) to measure the circumference of Earth.

This year, the PSC team has reached out for more partners in order to promote the goal of the event. We had international partners: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, France, Greece, India, Romania, Tunisia and United Kingdom. In addition, we had local partners from the Exploration Centers for Science and Technology: Aswan, Beheira, Luxor, Mansoura, Menoufia, Minya, Port Said, and Suhag. The Festivity comprises a fieldtrip to Elephantine Island in Aswan, interactive workshops and lectures.
