The Tate app: from wayfinding to dayfinding

NorthernLight was asked by creative agency Fabrique and technical agency Q42 to join in the international tender for developing a wayfinding app for the Tate Museums. The tender was won with the simple concept: from wayfinding to dayfinding. An app that is a friendly and intuitive companion to help make your visit the best visit possible. By the end of 2015, development started on the app that will personalize and enrich a visit to Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St. Ives. NorthernLight has functioned as a creative consultant for the concept and development phase.

The Tate app lets you lead the way to discover more about art, artists and Tate. Whether you’re planning to spend all day at Tate or just popping in on your lunch hour, the three easy-to-navigate sections will help you make the most of your time. Get closer to the art with exclusive content, see what free activities are going on that day and find the best places to take a moment away from the art.

There’s no need to follow a set route; the Tate App will pin-point your location within the gallery and show you content tailored to where you are, right now. If you already know what you’re looking for, you can find your favourite artist and use the app to head straight to see their work. From artists in their own words, to trivia titbits about the buildings, Tate App gives you the inside track. For now the app is available for Tate Modern and Tate Britain. It will be improved and optimized in the coming months, and then also become available for Tate Liverpool and St. Ives.

Key features:

  • make the most of the visit, no matter what you are in the mood for
  • see what’s going on today
  • find the nearest place to get coffee, eat your lunch or buy a postcard
  • search for your favourite artist and find out where to see their work
  • turn on notifications to be alerted to surprising information
  • hear exclusive audio from artists and curators
  • never get lost
