TRENDS IN SCIENCE AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION
Social justice and out-of-school science learning
Research suggests that participation in out-of-school science learning is not equitable but marked by advantage in social axes of age, social class, and ethnicity. For this reason, the author, Emily Dawson, outlines how ideas from social justice, in combination with other concepts of infrastructure access and literacies and community acceptance, can help us understand how equity issues are woven through out-of-school science learning practices. Dawson Emily (2017). "Social justice and out-of-school science learning: Exploring equity in science television, science clubs and maker spaces", in Science Education. 2017;101:539–547. RRI indicators for science education assessment
RRI suggests that education is a key matter in order to successfully equip the students with skills and knowledge to tackle complex societal challenges and foster active citizenship. This paper measures the impact of RRI on science education and it argues that looking at science education through the perspective of RRI can actually contribute to the integration of metacognitive skills and to address the complexity of learning.
