Hacking the hackathon

Discover what can be achieved from a collision of innovative minds with a mix of science, technology and creative fantasy. The participatory design approach can be used to achieve extraordinary results – addressing environmental concerns, innovating for medicine and providing new tools to help with humanitarian crises. This is where science and technology meet societal, human-driven needs.

But how to integrate this hackathon approach into science engagement? Explore the possibilities at this workshop and join us to inspire future change-makers by offering your visitors a unique, real-life experience in prototyping.

After lightening talks introducing case studies and methodology, divide into teams to work on specific design thinking tasks.

Spaces are limited, come early!

Just as business has gained through the appearance of crowd-funding, so I believe science and society can benefit from crowd-minding. During my Hackathon events I met many fascinating people. I witnessed the artist who in 10 minutes created a concept that solves half the problems of infant EEG researchers, such is the strength of crowd-minding. I would like to share with you how we harness this power at Copernicus.

I’m an economist who loves social participation. In Città della Scienza in Naples, I have been involved in promoting and applying several social participation methods to encourage public engagement in Italy. Open Space Technology is like a religion for me. The added value of our Hackathon events is the possibility to combine with an Open Space and I will show you how.

In science centres visitors have always had an active role, but could it be something more? I work as a project manager in the DIT-Heureka – Do It Together project, the idea of which is to develop the science centre as a platform for co-creation. Hackathon is a useful tool for co-creating new services for exhibitions. In Science Centre Heureka a hackathon was organized for teacher students: How would they like to develop the science centre as a learning environment and an innovation platform? Not only the results, but the process in particular were beneficial.
