FRida & freD - The Graz Children's Museum

FRida & freD is a place for all children. With our programmes, we hope to enable children to learn about the world’s diversity and to better understand its complexities. Along with the contents of our museum, we focus on making sure that the young people who visit us develop into confident and responsible citizens who interact carefully with their fellow human beings and their environment. We strive to be a place where children and their parents feel at home, a place that excites their senses and inspires their fantasies, and a place that touches their hearts and encourages their creativity. The Graz Children’s Museum – KIMUS Kindermuseum Graz GmbH – is a subsidiary of the City of Graz and was opened in 2003. FRida & freD is funded through shareholder contributions from the City of Graz, building and exhibition partners, sponsors, subsidies, entrance fees, revenues from our shop and touring exhibitions as well as consulting services and facility rentals. Each year, FRida & freD welcomes approximately 85 000 visitors. FRida & freD exhibitions, laboratory workshops, programmes and theatre performances are designed for children, ages four to twelve, and their families, as well as schools and larger groups. FRida & freD is a place for people from different backgrounds and cultures to socially interact. We welcome all visitors and provide accessibility for guests with physical needs. FRida & freD, housed in a modern purpose-designed building, is located in the middle of the Graz Augarten Park on Friedrichgasse. Designed by architects Helma Fasch and Jakob Fuchs, this “house for children” has received numerous awards. The name of our museum emphasises ‘togetherness’ and ‘cooperation’ and was created by children, together with children’s book author, Heinz Janisch, and the Children’s Museum’s team. The logo, in the form of a speech bubble, symbolises the exchange of ideas. With the motto “hands on – minds on”, FRida & freD designs exhibitions which allow a strong emphasis on hands on contact with displays. Children who visit our exhibitions have the opportunity to explore various worlds with all of their senses and without time constraints. The Children’s Museum is a realisable world for children, meaning that our top priority is for visitors to comprehend by observing and experiencing first-hand. FRida & freD’s interactive exhibitions are open for approximately one year before they start travelling internationally. Our touring exhibitions are loaned out to other children’s museums, science centres and museums which place emphasis on children and families and that look for hands-on exhibitions, where young visitors can explore themes with all their senses.
