Summer Program 2014

The Planetarium Science Center is currently running its Summer Programfor the sixth successive year, and with a capacity over 2,000 students dstributed over 2 identical halves of the summer vacation duration. This is aiming to accomodate the public increasing demand, as the Program has grown to be very popular among students of all ages, starting from the Kindergarten stage up to high school (4 – 16 years).

Eratosthenes Festivity 2014

The Eratosthenes Festivity has become an annual tradition that takes place every year on 21 June at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the city of Aswan. It is designed for preparatory school students, and includes a series of activities that revolve around the methodology Eratosthenes used in measuring the Earth’s circumference 2000 years ago.

On 21 June, the day of summer solstice, the 21st century school students conduct Eratosthenes’ experiment at the BA Plaza and in Aswan (Upper Egypt) to measure the circumference of the earth.

Cafe Controversial: Is war good for science?

The final Cafe Controversial in the series is presented by Dr Donna MacCallum, from the Institute of Medical Science, University of Aberdeen.

“Is war good for science?” comes at the centenary of World War 1, and we will be discussing how advances in medicine, infection control and technology often go hand in hand with war.

This event is free and open to everyone, and discounts are available on refreshments from the Tramsheds Coffee House. The debate will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair (Intel BASEF) 2014

The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in collaboration with Intel Egypt is organizing the seventh affiliate competition, Intel Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair (Intel BASEF 2014).The competition empowers students ages 14 -18 to conduct a research and present their projects findings under 17 science and humanities themes. To enhance the quality of projects and expand geographically, the PSC will organize in collaboration with the Ministry of Education 5 governorates and 7 schools affiliate fairs.

PSC School Year Program 2013

The Planetarium Science Center at the Library of Alexandria is organizing a number of workshops that encourage school students to explore their creativity and help them find out how to use it in their life; all the while enriching their knowledge. In the workshops, students are able to interact with each other and with the world around them in an exciting and entertaining manner; they are guaranteed to have a blast!

ROBOTHECA ALEXANDRINA OLYMPIAD (RAO) 2013

During the period 27—28 November 2013, the Planetarium Science Center in collaboration with the Arab Academy for Science & Technology and Maritime Transport, Regional Informatics Center (AASTMT/RIC) will hold a local robotics competition called Robotheca Alexandrina Olympiad (RAO). RAO is dedicated to students 12 to 18 years old. It comprises two categories; Diver Robot and Robofight category. In 2012 the PSC launched a Robotics educational program in cooperation with AASTMT/RIC. The program is composed of two levels, each comprising 10 hands-on sessions.

VOICES Public Event Spain

In Spain, VOICES focus groups highlighted what needs to change for a zero waste society, in terms of citizenship, policy, and research and innovation. The VOICES public event in Granada builds on these outcomes, with a Maker Faire, debates, workshops, pavilions and a range of exhibitions, bringing together the public, schools, research centres, politicians, universities, artists and craftsman to see how we can truly make the most of urban waste as innovation.

VOICES Public Event Portugal

VOICES outcomes will be disseminated in Lisbon as a key part of Portugal’s National Science and Technology Week, directly after the Ecsite Directors’ Forum which brings together science centre and museum directors from across Europe. The public event combines three distinct elements: an exhibition, a Maker Faire and a conference.
