Session legacy

Thank you 'Mrs B' (whoever you are!) for quoting me in your tweet, shown at the bottom of this screen: "I don't want to teach ppl about science. I want to infect them with my contagious delight. Then they'll teach themselves! @ianrusselluk at the #grandbazaar."

I remember saying this because, while I was cheerfully sharing as many as possible of the easy-to-try-at-home phenomena scattered on my table, people with such serious faces kept demanding 'the explanation'...

Science is bigger than school. There is more to science communication than suffocating curious young minds with endless information. Just like our wonderful, mysterious universe, Ecsite's Grand Bazaar is a treasure-house of phenomena, inspiring intellectual excitement, and joyful curiosity...

Science is great for getting people to talk (I have been working with the integration of English language training and science and technology for a few years now). I will bring to the table some (proven to be popular) examples of pseudoscience. You are invited to experience mentalism (mind reading), "magic" and personality assessment. We trust science to help us make informed decisions, but what happens when the science is not verifiable and is even intended to trick us? Will you be fooled?

You are invited to explore the aerodynamics of paper planes and rockets. Fold a plane using our printed template (or with your own design) then test it using a catapult which we have named ‘Russell's Slingshot’ (RS-1). The RS-1 kit is an educational toy, digitally cut from plywood. To ‘go into space’, you can design and build your own paper rockets and enjoy launching them with the RS-2 system, another educational toy made as a kit and powered by foot pressure.
