Four ways of making science understandable

In this workshop participants will brainstorm the most effective ways to communicate science for various purposes and target groups.

We will start with a short lecture from an excellent particle physicist and a member of the CERN council Prof. Branislav Sitar. Then we will divide workshop participants into four different groups (specialised science media, general media, scientific exhibitions and festivals and cyberspace) with the task of defining the most suitable and catchy way of presenting the given lecture to general public with the biggest possible outreach. An expert mentor will be assigned to each group to advise and guide participants.

Afterwards each small group will present their findings to all. Presentations will open a discussion among participants, mentors and scientists with the goal to examine the pros and cons of different presentations/media types, and to determine how to achieve the best result based on cooperation between all types of science communication platforms and actors.

particle physicist, member of CERN council
As the ex-vice-president and current Slovak representative to the CERN Council and the leader of Bratislava's group in the ALICE experiment, Prof. Branislav Sitár is a respected Slovak scientist. Even though his main field of research is nuclear physics, a complex and strange realm to the non-scientific community, he knows how to explain even the most complicated parts of it. Thus it should not come as a surprise that he is the one, who will give scientific lecture during our workshop.
