Equity & Inclusion

Citizen science is in constant growth, in terms of knowledge areas, projects, science engagement organisations, publications, geographical areas, physical and virtual spaces, impacts and, hopefully, participants’ profiles. A relevant issue concerns its various ethical and political implications. We ask whether: 1) the current development of CS is properly achieving a true democratisation of knowledge among diverse social groups; 2) the necessary ethical standards are being applied, above all in terms of fair relations between the different social agents; 3) more robust citizen communities are being created in terms of scientific culture, true cooperation, mutual trust and social cohesion; and 4) science engagement organisations are playing a central role in facilitating connections between society as a whole, research and policy. Considering the impacts of the White Paper on CS for Europe (Socientize Project 2012-2014 FP7-EC), we want to think about the best future way of CS.

Outcomes: what will participants get from this session? Skills, knowledge, experience etc.

Through the session, we will explore together with attendees the countless possibilities to actively participate in science, both as citizens and as science engagement organisations. Focusing on challenges and good practices related with inclusion and equity, we will overview the journey citizen science has encompassed in the last years, to think together about which paths are the most desirable, in particular with regard to the aspects outlined above.

Session speakers

Researcher and project manager
Ibercivis Foundation

Maite works in citizen science as a researcher and project manager at local, national and European level, and promotes it in the scientific, educational, environmental and political spheres. She coordinates the Citizen Science Observatory in Spain. Her academic background includes physics, environmental engineering and philosophy of science. She worked in education in the STEAM area. Maite will propose science - and citizen science itself - as a shared resource subject to social dilemmas, i.e., as a commons, requiring the co-responsibility of all social agents. Together with the other speakers and the audience, she will discuss some of the most relevant ethical-political aspects of participation in science.
Executive Director
Fundación Ibercivis
Francisco is a mathematician, computational mechanics expert. Since 2008 he has fostered citizen science, developing it at local, national and international level. He drove and was the first coordinator of the Zaragoza Citizen Labs. He has led numerous working groups in European projects. He is co-author of the White Paper on Citizen Science in Europe and actively contributes to policies favouring participatory, open and inclusive science. Francisco will contribute his experience in the development of two national strategies, together with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science and Innovation, to enhance citizen science as well as the current strategy together with Ministry of Universities.
