The Ecsite Annual General Meeting took place this afternoon in Trento at the Ecsite Annual Conference. It saw the election of a new presidency: Dutch science centre NEMO, Amsterdam, represented by CEO Michiel Buchel who will be serving a two-year mandate.

Asked about his mandate's agenda, Buchel declared: "Aside from encouraging knowledge sharing and helping to boost the network’s ability to bring people together, I am committed to promoting cooperation in the broad fields of science, nature and technology. It is important for science museums, science centers, natural history museums, aquariums and zoos to join forces and to connect strongly with science. I will also commit myself to placing the social importance of science communication high on the European Commission’s agenda."

At the same AGM, candidates were also elected or re-elected to sit on the Ecsite Board: discover the composition of the new Board.

About Michiel Buchel

Michiel is the general director and chair of the board of NEMO since 2003. Under his leadership NEMO became the largest Science Center in the Netherlands. Michiel is convinced that the role and impact of science centers and museums will grow and he is committed to work on public engagement for a better world. As an experienced cultural entrepreneur he in has a special interest in finding sustainable business models for science centres and museums of different sizes. Michiel is an alumni of the Noyce Leadership Fellows Programme and a member of the supervisory board of several cultural and scientific institutions and networks in the Netherlands. Michiel has been Treasurer of the Board and member of the Executive Committee of Ecsite for 6 years.

"Science and Technology are incredibly important in terms of keeping the world healthy and liveable," Buchel says, "not just for ourselves, today, but also for our children and their grandchildren. It is important for every member of the public to question the world around them, to be aware of what is happening, to seek answers and to assess their worth. This often starts at the very moment of inspiration, something we call the “spark”. Their exhibitions and activities make science museums and science centers ideal places in which to discover that doing science is not only extremely useful, it is also a lot of fun."
