High-level speakers such as Ministers, Parliamentarians, European Commission advisors, policymakers, academics, and other leading representatives from research institutions, have been invited to the second edition of the Gago Conference, taking place in Vienna (Austria) on 21 September 2018 on the theme of “Science, society and policy towards a Europe of knowledge: On the role of science engagement in Horizon Europe.”

Initiated and organised by Manuel Heitor, Portuguese Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, in collaboration with the Ciência Viva Agency, Ecsite and the ScienceCenter Netzwerk, this event will be the opportunity to debate research and innovation policy from the public engagement perspective, with a particular attention to the role of science centres and museums.

In the context of negotiations of the first proposal of Horizon Europe - the next EU DG Research framework programme for research and innovation - this conference provides a pan-European forum to strengthen the debate on emerging issues of research and innovation policy in Europe. It will also promote the necessary involvement of major stakeholders in policy making and the diffusion of knowledge in science education and culture.

The co-organisation of this event is part of Ecsite's Horizon Europe advocacy strategy. This will be a real opportunity to deliver a powerful message and advocate for the need of a stronger science engagement in Horizon Europe.

For Ecsite and all stakeholders in the science engagement sector, it is important to broaden the discussion outside our field and share our concerns with relevant stakeholders in order to create a common understanding on the need for more science engagement in research and innovation. If other various voices stand for science engagement, it makes our case stronger.

The programme includes three roundtable discussions:

  • Science engagement for a sustainable world: lessons learned from large research organisations
  • Active citizenship for a healthier society: lessons learned associated with the need for a cancer mission for Europe
  • Citizen's engagement in science and innovation: key for a sustainable and democratic Europe.
