Art and artists in museum MakerSpaces

Art and artists can inspire children, visitors and us to think about museums in new ways. As more and more science organisations explore possibilities for tinkering-based programmes and environments, artists can also play their part. This pre-conference workshop combines a mix of museum professionals with local artists to provide insight on how to create productive partnerships and share practical examples of experimental projects. Together we’ll discuss the vast range of artists that museum MakerSpaces can collaborate with and the varied reasons for pursuing such connections.

We’ll reflect on the pros and cons of connecting with emerging artists as well as with more established artists who may appreciate working in a different context. We’ll hear from museum professionals about how their collaborations work. Artists and makers will explain what they need from us to feel supported in programmes, residencies and events.

The session will begin with definitions of terms and raise questions from the group before working with Ida Hirsenfelder, a sound artist working in Ljubljana. After guided reflection, educators from Artencurs in Barcelona will share best practice. The afternoon will engage you in hands-on workshops and look at maker activity development from an artistic perspective.
