In this unit the pupils work as materials engineers to find a solution to the challenge of constructing an insulating shoe sole. The challenge is introduced to the pupils in the context of a school trip to Greenland. When they arrive at the airport in Greenland they discover that the suitcase with all their winter boots has disappeared. They have planned a dog-sled tour for the next day and so they will need to construct shoe soles that will keep their feet warm.
