EXTRA, the marketplace for scientific touring exhibitions.
Stacks of junk mail in the letter box, hundreds of e-mails every day, the incessant noise of mobile phone ring tones and conversations, endless chitchat on the social networks, millions of websites... We are swamped by an overwhelming flood of communication daily. How to deal with it? And how to develop effective communication behavior that successfully meets personal requirements yet doesn’t burden others unnecessarily?
To help answer these questions, the exhibition features a Clinic for Communication where visitors can have a computer-supported “communication behavior check-up.” Based on his or her replies to ques-tions, a Personal Communication Index (PCI) is established and the clinic visitor receives useful point-ers to help them on their way to optimizing balanced, relaxed “communication wellness.”
The experience also provides expert insight on how to identify the risk factors and warning signs of burnout or Internet addiction. Interactive stations unmask the myth of “multitasking,” inform users about the rules and norms that apply to different means of communication, and discuss the dangers of certain social media content. There are tips on everything from how to organize e-mails to sizing up Internet sites, how best to face the pressure to be permanently available to protecting oneself against spam.
Visitors are also asked to examine their own conscience – how many of us are guilty of inconsiderate communication behavior that contributes to the overkill?
