Unlocking the power of data for the benefit of society

With the media emphasising the promise of big data and AI in predicting everything and deriving groundbreaking insights, the public is facing a surge of hard-to-grasp claims. Public interest in sound science and evidence needs to be supported by increased awareness and knowledge around data science. But what kind of insights does the public need on data science? How do we equip the public to ask fundamental questions about quality and steer them through questions of reliability in data science analysis? "Data Science: A Guide for Society" published by Sense About Science, in collaboration with Elsevier will serve as the framework for our discussion.

With working case studies and discussion, the session takes a look at how to empower organisations active in the field of science engagement or involved in community work and shows them how to harness the full power of data.
