Lessons learned: NHM's new strategy

In 2020, the Natural History Museum set out on a bold new mission: to create advocates for the planet. Join us on a deep dive into how the Museum has begun to realise its new vision, including case studies from across the institution, with honest lessons learned from a national museum which is pivoting its outward position on the planetary crisis. Hear from staff working in International Partnerships, Digital and the museum’s Urban Nature Project. They will discuss both key achievements and challenges, what they would do differently, and invite the audience to reflect and give feedback on their own strategic projects and challenges they face.

This session is part of the Biodiversity and climate crisis conference track.

The Museums Urban Nature Project is transforming our five-acre site in South Kensington into a welcoming, accessible and biologically diverse green space in the heart of London. Alongside this we are working with organisations across the UK to inspire the next generation, create new opportunities for young people in cities and help everyone to learn about humanity's impact on the natural world. This project has given us the space to try new activities, build new partnerships, find new voices and paves the way for future NHM projects and ways of working. Lauren will speak to many of the challenges we face when building an inclusive approach to natural history and what lessons we have learned listening to and designing programmes with families, teachers, youth workers and young people with a low connection to nature.
