Giving visitors a voice in climate communication

Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges we face, but simply presenting an exhibition or a publication on the facts and figures doesn’t seem to have the desired effect on the public. What could be more effective? Should our organisations take up a more ‘activist’ role?

Join us to discuss projects, or ideas for projects, where visitors or potential visitors are invited to participate. Presenters will showcase different experiences in interacting and cooperating with a variety of different visitor groups. Following this, we will then sit down together to share and discuss visitor inclusion, what it can achieve and how to make it happen.

This session is part of the Biodiversity and climate crisis conference track.

The youth ignited the climate Change debate. Naturama and a regional newspaper took the challenge and aimed to collect views and opinions on how to tackle the climate change challenges. What are we ready to change in our behaviour to reduce our CO2 footprints, and what we accept of political demands affecting our social and economic daily life? I present the case story and the necessity of knowing what the public, think, find important and what they are willing to accept for our mutual future.

Copresented with Franziska Lang, this talk will present the Forum in our Science Centre, where we invite visitors to inform about and discuss special topics. In this way, we want to inform and activate the public on various issues. At the moment, we highlight climate change. Visitors are encouraged to obtain information, share opinions and discuss own ideas on the topic, but also to directly participate in different projects. The talk shares our insights about setting up and supporting such a new format for our Science Centre.

Youth were involved in developing an exhibition about sustainability by two co-creating activities. One activity included a university class for visual and interior design. These students developed exhibit prototypes, based on an open assignment and co-supervision by us. The other activity involved using a focus group of teenagers for workshops and prototype testing, through the project. Covid-19 was challenging, but some experiences resulted in tools that can be fruitful in the future.

NEMO Science Museum develops programs and exhibits on science, technology and global challenges like climate change. In our new temporary venue, NEMO De Studio, we program on these issues especially for adult groups. We are experimenting with new forms of interaction to engage public with different views. We will share our first experiences.
