Equitable Pedagogies for Informal Science Learning
This interactive session provides an opportunity for participants to explore a toolset in support of equitable pedagogies for Informal STEM learning (ISL). This toolset, co-created by researchers and educators in both the USA and the UK, provides ISL educators with concrete strategies that support young people’s rightful presence in STEM. These practises help to redistribute power in equitable ways, support more inclusive forms of learning and participation, and promote expansive outcomes such as STEM identities and agency. The toolset we will share includes an overview guide on Equitable Pedagogies along with individual descriptions of eight different pedagogical practises that educators can implement in their programmes, and planning and assessment tools (educator talk moves, youth bids, planning guides and practical measures). Participants will explore these tools, with guidance for adopting and adapting the tools to individual institutions.

Micaela will provide an overview of how the new Core Equitable Practices toolset is used in program design and enactments at a regional science center in Lansing, Michigan, US. Micaela will support participants in making sense of how CEPs can support program and activity design.
Day will describe how the toolsets can be adapted to meet the needs of particular programs and youth they serve. She will give examples from her work at a community-based after school club in the US. Day will support participants in making sense of how tools can be adapted.

Spela will share how practice partners in the UK plan and adapt practice using Core Equitable Practices in UK science centers and community spaces. Spela will support participants in learning how to use the tools to reflect on their own practice.
