Dream double acts: Science centres prepare scientists to meet their public

Science centres and museums play an important role in engaging the public with science, by connecting researchers and society. Programs must be designed to be attractive to the public, however, good communication skills are also essential for scientists to develop positive relationships with society.

The dream: for science museums to foster public awareness and appreciation of science by helping scientists share their work with society, and deliver an experience which is enjoyable, attitude-changing and engaging.

The innovation: providing communication training for scientists ahead of developing their public engagement events, so that the experience is as meaningful as possible for everyone.

This session will introduce examples of programs designed to develop effective science communication skills for scientists.

At the end of the session, discussion will be opened for participants to share opinions and expand on past experiences of how to develop more effective and innovative programmes through these ‘double acts’ with scientists. Our dream is for the ideas exchanged in the session to inspire others to adopt these practices, and enable scientists to cultivate direct and beneficial relationships with society.
