Don't worry, be happy (at work)

Happiness is something we all desire and at the same time happy people create a joyful, desirable atmosphere within a company. What makes people happy at work and what can managers do to create a positive atmosphere at the office? Ecsite Spokes magazine published an article about motivation and following that, our international team knows some tips & tricks that they would be delighted to share.

You are all welcome to come and share with us what makes you happy at work. Happiness is infectious and your stories could make others happy too!

At the Science Museum in London our mission is to inspire futures and ignite curiosity. Explainers and science communicators are integral to that aim. It is important that our staff are showing their enjoyment and passion for the subject to best inspire these things in our visitors. But how do we as managers keep them motivated and interested day after day. I will be sharing some successes and mistakes from different approaches that we have tried and am looking to discuss what are the basic things to keep staff happy and motivated. Because happy staff = happy visitors.

What makes a satisfied employee? What makes a unique workplace? I would like to share a case study: based on the Employee Value Proposition approach, a process which aims to build awareness of different motivation tools. As I introduced a series of meetings and workshops for top and middle management I will share workshop tools and results.

How might we design our workspaces to promote staff happiness? Lath has led the design of innovative workspaces for three different museums, and will share insights from these projects, including when things go sad instead :(

Happy, well-informed and satisfied staff is important for both daily operations at a museum and for giving our guests the best experience. As staff includes both core teams, front line museum hosts, event partners and perhaps volunteers both communication, motivation and support of individual skills and interests are important - but how do we achieve this in our day-to-day practise and how do we sustain it in times of organizational changes? I will share our practices and leaned lessons from our ongoing process at NHMDK.
