Developing environmentally-conscious makerspaces

Commitment: Climate & biodiversity crisis

In the past few years many museums have been developing tinkering studios, makerspaces and fablabs as part of their programmes and exhibitions. These spaces can offer ways to connect to our audiences and engage them in thinking about societal issues, sustainability and the environment in personally meaningful ways.

We are interested in discussing the behind-the-scenes ways that we can be more environmentally conscious in our programmes; avoiding superfluous use of technology and wasteful making. Methodologies, activities and projects that range from biomaterials, to solar panels, from the culture of repair to tool sharing will be presented and discussed.

We’ll develop a set of best practices and raise juicy questions about sustainable making and tinkering programmes. There will be room for discussion and reflection about the most relevant topics and themes for this emerging area of exploration.

Critics towards makerspace and fablabs allegedly promoting consumerism should not be too quickly dismissed, even if they clearly fail to understand the multifaceted vocation of these spaces. Being integrated in a building dedicated to urban manufacturing and circular economy, Onl’fait is continuously stimulated to reflect on our practises and adapt them.
