Communicating the science of sustainability: What is our role?

The UNESCO decade on education for sustainable development is coming to an end – and although the concept of education for sustainable development is gaining more and more credence in formal as well as in informal education, the topic of sustainability is still underrepresented in exhibitions at science museums and science centers. And has anything changed since the Ecsite conference of 2008 which focused on sustainability and the way the topic is handled in our field?

This session comprises examples of centres, museums and exhibitions tackling the challenge to communicate this complex topic to their audiences. A focus will be on the formats, exhibits and media used to communicate sustainability.

To trigger imagination and opinions on the subject, short impulse presentations will give an overview of international case studies of the topic. In a panel we will discuss how institutions could contribute to the communication of sustainability but also what types of challenges this topic poses for science museums and science centres.
