Bringing together children galleries with collections

Many science museums are currently working on the issue of children's museography around art objects and collections. This session proposes to explore the different questions, barriers and opportunities that these projects face. How to marry materiality with science and a hands-on approach? What are the bridges to be created between these different fields? How to interest this public to the objects of collection? How to create a link with the objects? This session will be an opportunity to share reflections related to projects which are currently in development or have already been completed.

This session is sponsored by ATELIER BRÜCKNER as a part of the 21st century skills conference track.

How can natural history museums bring the outside in, to create a meaningful connection to nature for some of the youngest minds visiting our museums? The Natural History Museum is creating a new early years gallery, aiming to inspire young children and their families, and take them on a path to a greater sense of connection and advocacy for nature. I will be sharing the start of our journey into understanding how natural history collections and experiences in museums can bring the natural world to life and explore nature as it has never been seen before.

How do young children engage with museum objects related to STEM? What objects attract them? What do children want to find out? What motivates them to do so? What challenges impede their engagement? And how can we as educators apply this information to further support their STEM engagement? These questions were the basis of the Early Years and Objects research project at the Science Museum, which looked at innovative ways to engage Early Years children with STEM-related museum collections. In this session, I will share project findings and discuss the implications for practitioners.

With Sophie Radix, responsible for the education and mediation unit in the Réunion des musées nationaux – Grand Palais. A new children's gallery is being created in the future new Grand Palais, shared between the Grand Palais national galleries (art exhibitions) and the Palais de la découverte (science museum). It aims to be a place for both arts and sciences. At the origin of this approach, there is a desire to invite children to marvel and arouse their curiosity: before an object or an installation, whether a work of art or a scientific phenomenon. How to manage this 'marriage' between artworks and interactive interpretation devices? I will include the participants in our reflections and questioning by asking for their opinions and experiences.

Naturalis Biodiversity Center engaged recently a huge renovation. This was the occasion to think about the links between collections (natural history objects, stuffed animals, fossils etc.) and exhibits, soundscapes, theatrical and immersive surroundings etc. Part of the discussion could be devoted to the evaluation of this new museum.
