Winners of the International Space Science Teaching competition announced

Space Awareness

The Space Awareness project aims to inspire and empower young European, and especially girls and minorities, to pursue space-oriented scientific careers. The project serves as a bridge between professional space scientists and young people and their educators.

As part of the project activities, teachers, parents and educators have been invited to take part in a contest to ‘show and tell’ the activities undertaken within the framework of the Space Awareness. The contest saw incredible diverse ways the Space Awareness resources have been used to inspire young potential space scientists.

The winners of the national competitions were automatically entered in the international round after winning first place in their country. The finalists received the Space Awareness Climate Box educational kit and the Rosetta toy, and the winners also receive recognition badges for schools and individuals.

The winners are: Felicia Jane (India), Gabriella Ricci (Italy) and Anita Simac (Croatia). Runners-up are Marina Molla (Greece) and Maria Elftheriou (Greece); V. Barath Kumar (India) received an honorary mention.

The jury panel was composed of space science experts and education specialists from the European Space Agency (ESA), the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Office of Astronomy Outreach, the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), the IAU astroEDU project and the Space Awareness Advisory Board. They were impressed with the high quality of the submissions.
