Jobs: Project Manager and Communications Officer

Sense about Science is a campaigning charity that champions the public interest in sound science and evidence.

There are two exciting opportunities to join the team:

• A Project Manager to lead an exciting new long-term project to draw together frontline experience with communities negotiating risks and influence the way it is communicated by institutions. Salary £36,000 p/a. This is a fixed term contract of 20 months (with the possibility of extension, subject to funding). Central London (W1). Will include some travel and out of hours activity.

The role involves:

  • Developing a project plan for delivery of the project, with activities and decision points
  • Ensuring the timely and effective delivery of all project activities, working with the small project team, partners and contributors
  • Generating engaging content for the risk literacy platform and managing others to deliver suitable material
  • Cultivating successful relationships, ranging from community groups to experts and senior figures at international government agencies, and working with the director to secure commitments from major institutions to further the goals of the project
  • Monitoring progress and impact against objectives and reporting monthly to the project steering group
  • Organising and managing meetings
  • Managing the project budget and expenditure, with the support of the Head of Programmes and Operations
  • Promoting the project externally, in writing and at meetings and speaking at events

• A Senior Communications Officer, to lead on planning and delivering publicity for our activities and events, identifying and seeing through opportunities to communicate our mission and work and developing the voice of the organisation. Salary £28,000 – 30,000 p/a. Central London (W1). Will include some travel and out of hours activity.

This role involves:

  • Planning and delivering communications across traditional and social media, for both our day-to-day activities and flagship events such as the annual Maddox Prize and Evidence Week
  • Responsibility for recognition in the public engagement space of Sense about Science’s achievements and roles, our ‘public fingerprint’, Director profile, organisation profile, and thought leadership
  • Writing engaging and informative newsletters and website announcements that inspire people to take action
  • Developing media contacts and responding to media enquiries
  • Proactively responding to the news agenda to pitch stories and comment
  • Responsibility for maintaining and developing the website and adding new content
  • Supporting the communications activity of the senior staff team
  • Representing Sense about Science at meetings and workshops
