Training Program for leadership in science centres

The first Euro-Mediterranean and Middle East Summer School, Granada, 22-27 September 2013

Why the EMME Summer School?

The Euro-Mediterranean and Middle East Summer School for Science Communication (EMME Summer School) aims to set-up a Euro-Mediterranean program for science centres and any other organisation working for the public engagement in science, in order to reinforce their capacities, to strengthen dialogue and exchange, and to increase the community of players in the region. The principal scope is to support the development of science communication projects and the establishment of new ones in the region.

The EMME Summer School is promoted by the two networks of science centres operating around the Mediterranean: ECSITE and NAMES and thanks to the active involvement of some of their members: Scientific center of Kuwait, BA Planetarium Science Centre, Città della Scienza, Universcience and Universcience partenaires, Museo delle Scienze, Parque de la Ciencias, and the Natural History Museum.

Who is the summer school aimed at?

The EMME Summer School is aimed at middle profile staff of existing science centres/museums and newcomers from other organizations (universities, local authorities, associations etc.) who want to establish new activities in the field of science communication or to develop new science centres.

The EMME Summer School aims to give professional skills and expertise for the management of science centres and museums and related activities. Future leaders in this field should have the competencies to run such organizations, looking at the impact on the local communities, taking into consideration the framework of public policies and in collaboration with private and public stakeholders. They should be able to conduct or to superintend different kind of activities engaging the public in science and technology, such as science exhibitions, science festivals, school programs, etc.

The objective of the training program is to give participants a strong set of competencies and methodologies that they will be able to adapt afterwards, depending on the size of the institution, type and scope of the organization and projects.
