Accessibility and netiquette during the Ecsite Online Conference

#Ecsite2021: making it accessible

Being an inclusive community is something that we are proud to call ourselves and here at the Ecsite Office, we want to make sure that as many of you as possible can attend and enjoy the experience. Holding a Conference online brings its own challenges, but this year's digital edition means that more people can watch and participate from the comfort of their own homes. There are no travel costs incurred, and we are all making our carbon footprint smaller by not being together physically in one location. But how else are we making the event accessible?

  • The cost of the Conference itself is not high - meaning that more of you can join us on 9-11 June
  • If you can’t join us live during the event, you can still register and enjoy recordings of the sessions in your own time until the end of 2021
  • You can use live captions on your smartphone so that everything will be automatically captioned on screen (settings -> accessibility -> hearing enhancements -> live caption)
  • To use live captions on your browser, make sure that you are using Google Chrome and follow these steps

Netiquette and behaviour during the Online Conference

It goes without saying that we will have a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination of any kind during the event (and during any event), but to be clear, we oppose insults and degradation of our anchors, speakers, convenors and anyone involved in the Conference. Racism, sexism, homophobia, abuse of minorities, religious insults, profanity or other forms of hate speech will result in comments being edited, hidden or completely deleted by our technical team without prior agreement. In the event of persistent or serious violations, we reserve the right to block users from our channels and our events temporarily and even permanently.

Do you have further suggestions on how we can make the Online Conference more accessible for all those attending? Send us an email!
