The new fusion - Real objects in digital contexts

In recent years, museums and science centres have been experimenting with bridging the gap between real objects and digital experiences. The meSch (Material Encounters with Digital Cultural Heritage) project has this challenge at its heart: bringing the physical dimension of museums together with relevant, innovative and engaging digital experiences. The latest innovation in this journey has been the use of digital media to augment reality, adding virtual contexts to an object’s immediate surroundings. This session will include a discussion of the use of transparent screen technology, which allows an almost seamless relationship between objects and changing digital contexts in the Science Museum’s major new communications gallery and at the Museum Boerhaave’s spectacular Anatomical Theatre.
