UNDERGROUND – a new vision for the earth

Currently many researchers are focused on how life has emerged and been affected by the earth environment. The underground is drawing attention as a key to the mystery. The amount of life in underground exceeds the amount above. Also research topics of the Antarctic underground, such as ice core and underground lake are introduced. Plus, an impressive image shows a surprising hypothesis based on underground research that the earth surface has frozen in the past. Lastly we reach mantle and the core, the deepest of the earth. Exploration into the underground world is a journey back to the origin of life and the earth, as well as to contemplate about the entire earth.

*The exhibitions can be produced in other languages.

In this exhibition, various topics are introduced by the latest research images, actual real-life samples, and hands-on exhibits. Also collaborative works with artists such as image works, a fabric installation, and an interactive exhibit create the underground world atmosphere.

This exhibition is newly edited from the original exhibition “UNDERGROUND – Adventure in the Darkness created by Imagination and Science”, featured at Miraikan from 22 September 2007 to 28 January 2009. http://www.miraikan.jst.go.jp/e/sp/underground/index.html
