Third (and last) day of Ecsite Annual Conference best of

Beautiful sunshine and a fresh marine breeze are bathing the last hours of the 25th anniversary Ecsite Annual Conference in The Hague. It is now official: 954 people from 48 countries attended! After yesterday’s brilliant Nocturne culminating in an unexpected jam session in Museon’s basement, participants are looking forward to tonight’s Farewell Party at a trendy beach club – before they meet again in Trento next year. 2013 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ahmet Üzümcü, Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), delivered today’s keynote. He called responsible research, outreach and education the “building blocks of durable peace”. The OPCW is convinced that raising awareness of ethical issues among young scientists and making its work relevant to citizens are key to sustaining the organisation’s achievements in drastically reducing the use of chemical weapons worldwide – a conviction that was put into practice with the OPCW’s contribution to Museon’s ‘Give Peace a Chance’ exhibition. Ahmet Üzümcü invited science centres and museums to follow this example and collaborate with international institutions to secure a sustainable world peace – in his words “much more than simply the absence of war”.   Again, participants were invited to make their own programme, picking favourites out of more than 30 sessions. Today’s harvest of stolen impressions includes pervasive biodiversity and chain work making, Alpine wolves and pampered staff, co-production recipes and conference insiders tips, procurement killers and living labs, airport exhibitions and staff swaps…   Post-conference blues outbreak? Think of next year’s promising ‘Food for Curious Minds’ edition hosted in MUSE’s brand new Renzo Piano building in beautiful Italian Tyrol. Write down Trento, Italy, 11-13 June 2015 in your diaries and don’t miss the chance to discover the museum and city so enthusiastically represented by a team of dancing cooks at the closing ceremony. Discussions started in the last few days on how to make the conference even better will be continued in the next weeks and months… get in touch, stay in touch!   Follow the conference on Twitter (#ecsite2014) and Flickr.
