The NHM in Vienna has remained true to its basic principle of "the riches of nature and its research" for over 100 years, and presents itself as a multi-facetted museum: the collection, which has grown for over 250 years and is estimated to contain 25 million items, is one of the largest and most extensive collections of natural history specimens in the world. It spans from the largest and oldest exhibtion of meteorites, through valuable precious stones, fossils and rare animals, to the world-famous Venus of Willendorf. However, it is scientific research that forms the basis for all the exhibitons, guided tours an presentations in the display area.
