Sustainable development will be high in political and media agenda with the Rio+20 Conference coming up in June 2012. This is a wonderful opportunity for our institutions not only to reinforce public awareness of environmental issues but also to reinvent the way we work.

To promote sustainable development we first have to model good practices ourselves. But how can we adapt our buildings to reduce our environmental impact? How can sustainable development perspectives transform the way we are working inside our institutions? How could we address sustainable development issues in our programmes? The Nature Group will try to start answering those questions, and more, thanks to keynote lectures, case studies, discussion and a workshop.

The session is dedicated to directors, science communicators, designers, architects, explainers, and managers.

This is the only workshop taking place in the Gardens of the Natural History Museum in Toulouse, 30 May 2012.

Maarten Okkersen, Head of Design & Productions, Museon, Museum for Science and Culture,
in the Netherlands is premiering a Pre-Conference Workshop at Ecsite 2012.

The Creative LAB is a practical workshop to help participants create concepts in management and design. The underlying premise of Okkersen’s workshop is that management and development of creativity is not about thinking, but about doing.

This workshop begins in the mind of the participants and focuses on creating ideas.” But imagination is not enough,” says Okkersen. “Real creativity begins when you stop planning and start implementing. Everybody can be creative, it is not only designers and art directors who can be creative, we also need financial creativity!”

More than ever, people are looking for products that actually enhance life. “People want genuineness, authenticity, and inspiration,” Okkersen adds. “We emphasize the value of prototyping, being innovative means failing repeatedly, controlled failures are an important step toward success.”

Carlo Ratti, Italian architect and engineer, will deliver the keynote address at the Ecsite Annual Conference 2012.

Ratti earned himself a place on Esquire Magazine’s Best and Brightest list in 2008 and was featured in Seed Magazine’s Salon, together with mathematician Steven Strogatz. He presented as a delegate in January 2009 to the World Economic Forum in Davos. In 2011, he spoke at a TED conference in Longbeach, California, USA.

Ratti directs the Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Boston, USA. The lab investigates different aspects of the built environment of cities (street grids, plumbing, waste collection systems, etc) using technology that changes the way human beings understand the urban landscape. Ratti is currently developing a new lab in Singapore that will focus on the future of urban mobility.
