Sports Arena

SPORTS Arena is the ultimate in high-action science combined with knowledge
of fitness and nutrition. With hands-on and body-on experiences, this
exhibition allows visitors to explore the fascinating science behind many
sports.

Sports Arena is the best game in town!

Sports Arena, Ontario Science Centre

SPORTS ARENA Features the following hands-on an body-on experiences:

Balance Beam

Taking a walk on a 10cm-wide competition balance beam isn't easy. Visitors will see why some gymnasts say, "it's all in the nose"

Balance Timer

Test your ability to balance by standing on this electronic teeter board. Balance is dependent on the sense of sight, nerve impulses from the semi-circular canals of the inner ear and sensations from muscles, tendons and joints.

Baseball Pitch

Join the major leagues - pitching a baseball the regulation 60 feet 6 inches (18.5 metres), from pitcher's mound to home plate. Speed and accuracy are key!

Land Like A Cat

For gymnasts and high jumpers, the landing is as important as the take-off. Visitors will take a low jump and measure the force of their landing. Spreading the force of impact can save athletes from serious injury.

See Yourself Walk

Walking involves a lot of fancy footwork - and crawling as a baby helps you walk today. Visitors step onto a treadmill, turn to a TV monitor and watch how they look from behind as they walk.

Sportchair Sprint

Visitors sprint 50 metres on a pair of specialized sport wheelchairs set on rollers and compare their times, discovering that when it comes to wheelchair racing, a little push goes a long way.

You Be The Judge

A must for armchair experts! Six visitors can score an athletic performance and discover how difficult it can be to judge Olympic events.

Rowing

Row, row, row your boat, gently (or at Olympic speed) down the stream...After the starting gun goes off, visitors start rowing, checking their progress on the screen to see how many boat lengths they are ahead...or behind.

10 Metre Dash

One or two raceres can enter the starting block and count down for a ten metre dash. They can race against each other, against an image of Jackie Joyner Kersey (former US Olympic runner) a Cheetah or a Dinosaur. A padded ending wall is provided to halt those who overshoot the space.

Supermarket

This child-sized mock-up of a supermarket gives the young visitor a chance to learn about nutrition and health and what it means to have a balanced diet. They will also get a chance to practice their math skills as they sort and weigh a variety of products.

Body Tables

Personal relevance and interest is generated through a match-up of sport to illustrative science mini exhibits. Demystify how the body works on eight body tables and joint wall.

Little Fit And Fun

This is a workout space expressly designed for the young visitor. Equipment, costumes and apparatus are smaller in scale and designed with little tyke safety in mind by a leading manufacturer of pre-school equipment.

Green Screen Games

Visitors step into one of two virtual environments and become part of a game with images of real athletes. Visitors have the option to play volleyball, soccer, hockey or basketball.
