PASTEUR, the experimenter

Understanding the logic behind Pasteur’s discoveries and appreciating the
scope of his inventions, as a savant and innovator

Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) is an historical hero whose international reputation is almost unparalleled for a French savant. After Leonardo da Vinci and Charles Darwin, Universcience continues with its cycle on the cultural history of sciences and techniques by devoting an exhibition to him.

Physics and chemistry, biology and microbiology, agricultural industry, animal and human health... Pasteur has been part of the modernization movement of the Siècle des merveilles (‘century of wonders’).

He, amongst others, opened the doors into a microscopic world, with all sorts of inhabitants. He created innovative disciplines, programs and research methods.

Pasteur was not just a savant but also an innovator. This exhibition will introduce visitors to Pasteur’s journey in an interactive style, showing his numerous research domains, his experimenting talent, and also his relationship with art, techniques and industry. The story, updated in the light of recent scientific and technical discoveries, will also present facts and characters which have previously remained in the shadows.

An analysis of Pasteur’s figure will help us understand how science should be practiced and why this scientist has become renowned on a par with Victor Hugo, in France and abroad.
