Annual Conference – Expect the unexpected

Fresh ideas mean free registration at #Ecsite2016

Expect to meet “unusual suspects” at the conference this year in Graz! Thanks to the “fresh ideas mean free registration” scheme launched this year by the Annual Conference Programme Committee (ACPC), 15 “outsiders” will be contributing to sessions.

Feedback from Ecsite Annual Conference participants has been consistent over the years: you want space and time in the programme for science engagement core business topics like exhibition development or learning, but you’re also looking for surprising sessions, new angles and outside perspectives. The second round of applications for the “fresh ideas mean free registration” scheme is now closed and we’re excited about the 15 inspiring speakers it is bringing to the conference.

We find two artists, a lab manager, two teachers, a psychologist, an interior designer, a brand curator and two academics among them. Two of them will be coming all the way from New York and another one from the Georgian capital, while we’ll also get the chance to meet three locals.

We’ll debate science communication as a tool for peace building in post-conflict regions with a physics teacher and consultant who had to flee his country as a teenager. We’ll get to test how play, game and art can “nurture our sense for holistic systems and their complex interrelations in a profoundly new way”. We’ll get up to speed on DNA barcoding and hybrid projects involving citizen scientists, artists and scientists.

We’ll learn how to design alternative game controllers on the spot and will be taken on a European interview & filming tour involving 30 science communicators. We’ll discuss the dynamics of regional networks in emerging science engagement scenes and will get into the nitty-gritty of advanced game development. We’ll hear an academic’s perspective on RRI, a psychologist’s take on making and a PhD student’s research on collaborations with disabled user groups. Not to forget a Russian-Austrian art-science project involving border-crossing seeds…

Can’t wait? Online registration opens on 24 February.
