What is Ecsite

Ecsite - the European Network of Science Centres and Museums

Ecsite is the European network for science centres and museums, linking science communication professionals in more than 400 institutions in 50 countries. Founded 20 years ago, Ecsite connects member institutions through projects and activities and facilitates the exchange of ideas and best practice on current issues.

Members include science centres and museums, science festivals, natural history museums, zoos, aquariums, universities, research organisations and companies communicating and engaging the public in science through accessible, interactive exhibits and programmes.

Public trust
Science centres and museums are trusted by the public as independent sources of information, since they provide opportunities to hear different points of view about scientific issues.

Wide impact
Ecsite member institutions attract over 30 million visitors in their venues and many millions more through their websites.

Changing attitudes
A global survey of more than 180 research and evaluation studies concluded that visits to science centres and museums contribute to changing attitudes towards science and technology, increasing young people’s motivation to choose science as a career.

Working with schools
Science centres and museums provide students with educational activities that complement the school curricula and offer training and professional advancement programmes for teachers.

Europe’s future
More than 60% of visitors are under 25, and almost 40% of them are school students. Our visitors represent Europe’s future as a leading scientific, technological and industrial region of the world.

Advancing dialogue
Science centres and museums provide a common ground where scientists and the public can meet and discuss controversial and contemporary issues about science and technology, a crucial element for the economic and social development of Europe.
